Dell was once a somewhat common name in the smartphone world, having released a few different handsets featuring both Android and Windows Phone, but it appears that we'll no longer be seeing any phones stamped with the company's round logo. Jeff Clarke, vice chairman and president of Global Operations and End User Computing Solutions at Dell, recently revealed at the Dell World conference that his firm is done making smartphones. "It needs a lot of investments to really be successful," Clarke explained to Forbes.

Dell was responsible for the Aero, Venue and Venue Pro, the first two of which were powered by Android while the third ran Windows Phone 7.5. Both the Venue and Venue Pro were still available through Dell's online store earlier this year, but Dell opted to discontinue sales in late March. The company also tried its hand at releasing phones over in China, but now that it's giving up on smartphones altogether, it appears that that plan didn't go as well as Dell had hoped.

While Dell's handsets never really received rave reviews, especially when it comes to the Aero, it's still never exciting to see the smartphone world lose a competitor. The good news, I suppose, is that anyone out there that may have been holding out for an Aero 2 or Android-powered Venue Pro can now move on.
