Normally when it comes time to post an image to Twitter, all that the user can do is select a photo to be added to a tweet. Twitter announced today that it's stepping up its photo-sharing experience, though, by updating its Android and iOS apps to give users photo editing options that include cropping and eight different filters. The filter options include Vignette, Black & white, Warm, Cool, Vintage, Cinematic, Happy and Gritty. Twitter has also posted a brief video explaining the new photo editing features.
The addition of photo filters to Twitter's official apps appears to be a bit of a shot at Instagram, which was recently purchased by Facebook and now no longer supports Twitter cards, meaning that Instagram images posted to Twitter are no longer viewable directly in a Twitter feed and instead must be looked at on Instagram's site. Twitter users can even quickly crop their image into an Instagram-like square using the new apps. The addition of editing and filters to Twitter's apps could save a bit of time for some users since they no longer need to go through Instagram for their filtered photo tweeting needs, and it'll be interesting to see how many folks just use Twitter's filters rather than tweeting their Instagram shots. Twitter's updated app for Android is now available from Google Play, and the iOS app should be going live in the App Store shortly.
