Republic Wireless launched a little over a year ago, offering users an unlimited plan for $19 per month and a phone that had built-in support for making calls and sending texts over Wi-Fi. The service was in a beta state and only allowed new customers in waves, but today Republic has announced that it's now completely open for everyone. Unlimited calls, texts and data are still included for $19 per month, and interested customers can now pre-order the Motorola Deft XT from Republic for $249 plus a $10 start-up fee and taxes. Devices are expected to start shipping out in mid-December.
As for the Defy XT itself, the device features a 3.7-inch 854x480 display and VGA camera on its face, as well as a 5-megapixel shooter around back. Also included is a 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, 1GB ROM, microSD slot and a 1,650mAh battery. Running the whole show is Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The Defy XT uses Republic's "Hybrid Calling technology" to route things like calls and texts over Wi-Fi when a connection is available and Sprint's 3G network when there isn't a Wi-Fi hotspot around.
Considering that Republic Wireless has been in beta for over a year, it's nice to see the that the service is finally able to open up and begin admitting anyone that's interested in joining rather than making them wait in line for an opportunity to sign up. Of course, customers that pre-order the Defy XT today will have to wait until mid-December for their device to actually arrive, but at least now everyone's got a chance to order.
