It's October! You know what that means? Besides the fact that many folks will be stuffing their faces with candy at the end of this month, it also means that it's time to check out the latest Android version distribution numbers. The figures, which are based on the number of Android devices accessing the Google Play store during the 14-day period ending on October 1, show that  Jelly Bean grew slightly compared to the last time the numbers were tabulated. Android 4.1 is currently present on 1.8 percent of devices, up from 1.2 percent at the start of September. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich saw a pretty significant growth from 20.9 percent last month to 23.7 percent this month, meaning that it accounts for nearly one-fourth of all Android devices.

Moving in pre-4.x versions of Android, version 3.x Honeycomb finished the period with a share of 1.9 percent, down from 2.1 percent in September. Android 2.3 Gingerbread is still leading the dessert pack, appearing on 55.8 of all devices, which is a drop of nearly 2 percent from last month. Rounding out the list is Android 2.2. Froyo with 12.9 percent, Android 2.1 Eclair at 3.4 percent, Android 1.6 Donut with 0.4 percent and Android 1.5 Cupcake at 0.1 percent.

While Gingerbread is still the most dominant version of Android in Google's numbers, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean continue to slowly gain ground while Gingerbread has been losing share. One thing that ought to help boost Jelly Bean's growth is the Samsung Galaxy S III's update to Android 4.1, which began in Poland late last month. Samsung said that the update will "gradually" hit other markets, and while it's not yet clear when U.S. customers can expect to get a taste, there are likely many a Galaxy S III user eagerly awaiting for those updates to drop.
