It looks like we'll soon have two more entrants in the ever-growing battle of the tablets, as Barnes & Noble this morning took the wraps off of the latest entries in its Nook line. First up is the smaller of the two, dubbed the Nook HD. The Nook HD features a 7-inch display, the same size as its predecessors, at a resolution of 1440x900. Packed inside the 11.1 ounce Nook HD, users will find a 1.3GHz dual-core OMAP 4470 processor, 1GB RAM and either 8GB or 16GB of storage, which can be supplemented with a microSD card. Pre-orders for the Nook HD in Snow or Smoke are now live on Barnes & Noble's website, and the device is listed with an availability of November 1. The Nook HD is priced at $199 for the 8GB model and $229 for the 16GB version.
Moving on and up in size, we've got the Nook HD+. The Nook HD+ features a bump in both screen size and resolution compared to the Nook HD, featuring a 9-inch display at 1920x1280, which works out to 256 pixels per inch. Also included is a 1.5GHz dual-core OMAP 4470 processor and a full gigabyte of RAM. The Nook HD+ is available in Slate with either 16GB or 32GB of storage, and users can add more memory thanks to the expandable storage slot. Pricing for the Nook HD+ is set at $269 for the 16GB variant and $299 for the more capacious 32GB version. Like the Nook HD, interested customers can now pre-order the Nook HD+ from BN.com, and the slate is listed with an availability of November 1.
Barnes & Noble also made some content announcements this morning, including a revamped Nook Store as as well as a Nook Video store for TV shows and movies, the latter of which will be arriving alongside the new Nook tablets. Both the Nook HD and Nook HD+ look like worthwhile additions to Barnes & Noble's Nook family, and the company looks ready to go head-to-head with Amazon and its new Kindle Fire devices, with B&N referencing the Fires several times in today's announcement. We'll just have to wait until all of the devices make their way onto store shelves to see how they actually compare to one another.
