Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 5 at an event later today, but it appears that the company may have prematurely outed the name of its new handset on its website. As discovered by 9to5Mac, searching for "iPhone-5" on Apple's website brings up multiple hits for pages with iPhone 5 in the name, though the links aren't active as of this writing. A separate search for "new iPod touch" also reveals an inactive press release with today's date that mentions both a new iPod touch and new iPod nano.
There's been quite a bit of speculation as to what Apple will call its latest iPhone, with some folks thinking that the company would go with "the new iPhone" like it did with its new iPad earlier this year, while others have suggested "iPhone 5" since it follows iPhone 4 and 4S. Judging by the results returned by these searches on Apple's website, the Cupertino firm has decided to go with iPhone 5. While these searches don't offer up much in the way of information about the iPhone 5 itself, at least prospective buyers now likely know the name of the device that they may soon be opening their wallet for. Apple's event will be kicking off today at 10:00 a.m. PT, 1:00 p.m. ET, so keep it locked to PhoneDog for more details on the iPhone 5.
UPDATE: 9to5Mac has also found that searching Apple's site for "iPhone-LTE" returns a result for an iPhone page related to LTE, suggesting that the handset will indeed feature 4G LTE connectivity as has been rumored. Check out a shot of the results page below.
