Well, this is a bit of a surprise. Sparrow, a company that's know for its Mac and iOS email applications, announced today that it's been acquired by Google. Sparrow broke the news in a blog post on its official site, explaining that it'll be joining the Google's Gmail team "to accomplish a bigger vision." The company also says that although it's being acquired, it'll continue to make its apps available and provide support to users. However, it also said in a statement to The Verge that since it'll be busy with new work at Google, it doesn't plan to launch any new features for its apps.
Sparrow's apps have been praised by Mac and iOS users looking to use something other than Apple's stock Mail apps on those platforms. Sparrow had been working to integrate push support into its iPhone app, but with the news that the company won't be releasing any new features for its apps, the fate of the app's push support has been cast into doubt. With Sparrow joining Google's Gmail team, though, perhaps iOS users can hope for an improved Gmail app to hit at some point in the future.
