We learned last month that Cricket Wireless will soon become the first prepaid carrier in the U.S. to offer the iPhone, but if a new report is to be believed, it won't be the only prepaid operator with the iPhone for long. According to a report from MarketWatch, Virgin Mobile is also set to begin selling Apple's smartphone in the near future. An announcement from Sprint (Virgin Mobile's parent company) is set to come this week, say "people familiar with the company's plans," and Virgin will reportedly start selling the iPhone as soon as July 1. No details on pricing were given. The report also has no information on whether or not Boost Mobile will also end up carrying the iPhone.
The announcement that Cricket will be launching the iPhone is big news, not only because it means that the the iOS handset is continuing to make its way to more carriers, but also because it could help to bring a better selection of devices to prepaid carriers. A Virgin Mobile iPhone is something that could help that movement even more, and I bet that there are several of Virgin customers that'd like to see Apple's smartphone on VM's shelves. While none of this is officially official just yet, an announcement is rumored for this week, so it may not be long before we hear more. Stay tuned.
