There's been an awful lot of spectrum talk in the news as of late thanks to one carrier's proposed AWS acquisitions, but tonight there's some other possible spectrum deals in the news. According to some new FCC filings, both AT&T and U.S. Cellular are interested in picking up some 700MHz spectrum licenses from Cox Communications. AT&T has its eyes on eight 700MHz B Block licenses covering eight cellular market areas (CMAs) in Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Virginia. Separately, the big blue carrier is also trying to pick up four 700MHZ C Block licenses from Peoples Telephone that cover some portions of Texas. U.S. Cellular is interested in four 700MHz A Block licenses.
As for what AT&T and U.S. Cellular have planned for the spectrum, both carriers say that the licenses would help them in their 4G LTE network plans. All of these deals still need to go through the regulatory process before any spectrum actually changes hands, but it's good to see both AT&T and U.S. Cellular continue to work to expand their LTE coverage. We'll keep an eye on these deals and pass along any new details that come up. Stay tuned.
