Amazon introduced us to its 7-inch Kindle Fire last year, and ever since the tablet went on sale in November, it's become one of the more popular Android-powered slates around. Now a report claims to have a little information on a new tablet that the online retailer is cooking up. According to a source speaking to Reuters, Amazon is planning to debut an 8.9-inch tablet later this year. No other spec or pricing details were mentioned, but the tipster claims that we'll see the larger device "closer to the holiday season."
The Reuters source also claims that Amazon is planning to launch a new version of its Kindle e-reader in July. It's said that this new Kindle will have a front light to make nighttime reading easier and will be available in both Wi-Fi and 3G variants. As far as pricing for the light-enabled Kindles goes, the source believes that Amazon will either keep the price tag of the devices similar to the existing models or bump them up by a small amount.
We've heard rumors of a larger Kindle tablet in the past, and with the popularity that the Kindle Fire has experienced, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Amazon experiment with a larger model. Of course, there's still a lot we don't know about the device, and its rumored debut near the holiday season means it'll be a while before we see it come to market (if it ever does).
