Sprint announced today that it's joining the Tizen Association, a group focused on both the marketing and education of the Tizen platform in the industry and helping to develop its presence in the market. The carrier also revealed that Fared Adib, vice president of product development at Sprint, will be joining the Tizen board of directors. Sprint is the first North American carrier to join the Tizen Association, which NTT DOCOMO, Orange, SK telecom, Telefónica and Vodafone are also members of.
Tizen is an open source, standard-based platform that's backed by
Samsung and Intel and recently hit version 1.0, referred to as "Larkspur." The platform is capable of working on several devices, smartphones and tablets includes, but so far we've yet to actually see a Tizen-powered product come to market. Still, it's interesting to see Sprint becoming part of the Tizen Association, and I'm sure that the group is glad to have the Now Network and Fared Adib as partners. Sprint's announcement of today's news is available below.
