The new iPhone rumor mill keeps on churning today, with a new report claiming to have details on how the body of the next iOS handset will look. According to iLounge, Apple won't be using the oft-rumored teardrop body shape for its next iPhone, opting instead for another iPhone 4-like design. Rather than having a full glass body, though, the site's source claims that Apple will include a flat metal panel on the middle of the device's rear. The new iPhone is also said to be longer and thinner than the current model, coming in at around 125mm tall (10mm taller than iPhone 4), 58.5mm wide (similar to iPhone 4) and 7.4mm thick (around 2mm thinner than iPhone 4). This suggests that Apple will make the screen on the new iPhone taller while keeping its width about the same, meaning that the display would have a different aspect ratio than previous models and a screen size that'll reportedly measure around four inches.
Moving on to the bottom of the new iPhone, the handset will allegedly feature a new dock connector that's smaller than the 30-pin connector that's currently used by iOS devices. The connector is said to be pill-shaped and just a little larger in size than the speaker on the bottom of the iPhone 4. A mockup of what the new connector may look like is below.
This isn't the first time that claims of a new iPhone with a metal back and larger display have surfaced, as we heard reports of such a device all the way back in March of last year. The mockup provided with today's rumor definitely looks interesting and is somewhat reminiscent of the original iPhone, which feature a mostly metal rear but also had a small black plastic base that housed the antenna. As for the reports of a screen that's taller but not wider, such claims make some sense since it would allow Apple to make the iPhone's display larger without forcing users to adopt a wider grip on the device.
