Good news today for Sprint customers hoping that those rumors of an upcoming LTE iPhone hold true. Speaking to Dow Jones, Sprint CFO Joe Euteneuer said that his carrier's contract with Apple for the iPhone is similar to the ones that the Cupertino firm has with AT&T and Verizon, and so Sprint would be able to offer an LTE-enabled iPhone should Apple release such a device. Euteneur explained that Sprint isn't being held to any kind of LTE coverage requirements by Apple, adding that if a new iPhone were to launch in October like the 4S did last year, Sprint will be "basically done" covering the major markets in the U.S. with LTE service. However, the exec wouldn't speculate as to whether or not Apple actually has an LTE iPhone in the pipeline.

Although we've yet to get any kind of hard evidence showing that Apple is working on an LTE-capable iPhone, some believe that the presence of LTE in the new iPad could indicate that the next iPhone will be getting a similar treatment. Sprint is planning to launch its LTE coverage in a handful of markets by the middle of this year, which will put it behind AT&T and Verizon in terms of LTE coverage, a fact that caused some to wonder if Apple may prevent Sprint from offering an LTE iPhone.
