MetroPCS to roll out VoLTE service in the second half of 2012

Today MetroPCS provided an update on its plans to roll out Voice over LTE (VoLTE), a move that we first got wind of last year. Originally MetroPCS had intended to launch VoLTE service in the first quarter of 2012, but now Metro has pushed its VoLTE debut back to sometime in the second half of 2012. The operator also revealed that it will launch at least one VoLTE-capable handset in the second half of the year. MetroPCS adds that it's currently testing VoLTE service in an unidentified market.

Besides bringing with it Voice over LTE service, MetroPCS's move to VoLTE will also allow it to repurpose some of the spectrum that it uses for CDMA service to help build out its LTE coverage, something that it can't do with voice service on CDMA and data on LTE. Obviously the move to VoLTE is big for MetroPCS, and although it's kind of a bummer that we have to wait until an unspecified data in the second half of 2012 for the service to arrive, it's good to hear that Metro is still working toward getting VoLTE launched. How many of you are located in a MetroPCS 4G LTE market?
