We knew it was coming, and now Samsung has set a date for the start of the Galaxy S II's Ice Cream Sandwich update. Samsung's Philippines branch has announced on its official website that the international version of the Galaxy S II (GT-I9100) will officially get its bump up to Android 4.0 starting this Saturday, March 10th. The update will be available as an over the air update and through Samsung's Kies 2.0 software and, besides the upgrade to ICS, will also include goodies like Face Unlock, Android Beam and an improvement in the usability of multitasking and select apps.
It's worth noting that, since this update is for the international Galaxy S II, folks here in the U.S. with a carrier-branded version of the GSII won't be able to take part in the upgrade. Still, it's good to see that Samsung will soon be kicking off the Galaxy S II's ICS update for anyone that may have opted for the international model. It's not clear when U.S. variants like Sprint's Epic 4G Touch and T-Mobile's Galaxy S II will see their own Android 4.0 upgrades, but here's to hoping that it's not too long before the carriers can finish testing and begin pushing out their own updates. Obviously we'll keep an eye out and pass along any information on U.S. GSII ICS updates as we get it.
UPDATE: So much for that. Samsung's official @SamsungTomorrow Twitter account has said that the March 10th ICS upgrade date for the Galaxy S II is not true and was posted by Samsung Philippines in error. The tweet goes on to say that Samsung will pass along the actual GSII ICS launch date on Twitter once it's been set.
