The fate of webOS has been in limbo ever since HP announced that it'd no longer be creating hardware for the platform, but tonight the rumor mill has churned out a report claiming that the company may finally be getting close to deciding just what to do with the operating system that it bought last year. According to four sources speaking with Reuters, HP is currently considering selling webOS for "hundreds of millions of dollars," which is significantly less than the $1.2 billion that it paid for Palm and webOS. The tipsters allege that there have been several companies that have expressed interest in webOS, with one of the sources saying that Oracle may be one of the more likely suitors.
Although it remains to be seen whether HP will actually end up selling webOS — and if it does, who the buyer may be — but it'd definitely be a bummer to see the platform sold off to a company that just wants it for its related patents. Of course, even if a company interested in creating more webOS hardware actually bought it and did just that, that firm may not have any more success against the likes of Android and iOS than HP did. It'll definitely be interesting to see just what turn the tale of webOS will take next, so be sure to stay tuned for more.
