Last week saw RIM pull the wraps off some new BlackBerry 7-powered handsets like the Torch 9810 and 9850/9860, and while those devices are certainly a step up from BlackBerrys of the past, many CrackBerry addicts have already set their sights on RIM's QNX-powered smartphones. We haven't heard much about those products in the past, but today the folks at BGR claim to have the details on the RIM's first QNX phone. Allegedly codenamed the BlackBerry Colt, the handset is currently making the testing rounds in the RIM labs with a launch expected to go down sometime in Q1 2012.
When it comes to spec information on the Colt, many of the details are still up in the air. However, it sounds like RIM may be making some compromises in terms of features in order to make QNX work on a smartphone. According to BGR, the Colt is currently packing a single-core processor and may launch without BlackBerry Enterprise Server support. Instead, companies that want to use Microsoft Exchange email may need to use Microsoft's ActiveSync service.
As with most leaks, it's worth mentioning that none of this is official just yet and it's entirely possible that some of these details could change by the time that the Colt finally makes it to market. As it stands now, though, it sounds like RIM's first QNX smartphone may not end up being the superphone that some BlackBerry fans have been hoping for. QNX alone may be a big enough change for some users to pull the trigger on a device like the Colt, but I bet many would like to see specs like a dual-core processor make the cut, too. What do you all make of the Colt as we know it now? What features would you need a QNX BlackBerry to offer before you'd consider picking one up?
