We've seen a couple of leaks revealing T-Mobile's plans to offer G2x, better known as the Optimus 2X, but today Magenta has gone ahead and made everything nice and official for us. The G2x is mostly the Optimus 2X we've come to know and love, meaning you're looking at a 4-inch 800x480 display, dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 processor, 8 megapixel camera with LED flash, and 1.3 megapixel front-facing shooter. Where the G2x does differ, though, is the fact that it packs stock Android 2.2 and compatibility with T-Mobile's 4G network. T-Mo also announced several new hotspots and USB sticks, including the T-Mobile Rocket 3.0 that supports their 42Mbps network and the T-Mobile 4G Mobile Hotspot, which connects up to five WiFi-enabled devices to T-Mo's 21Mbps network. You can expect all of those devices later this spring.
Additionally, T-Mobile announced the first major markets where it'll be upgrading its network to support speeds of up to 42Mbps. The areas that'll get access to Magenta's speedy new network first are Las Vegas, New York, and Orlando, with Chicago, Long Island, and areas in Northern New Jersey next in line for the upgrade. By the middle of the year, T-Mo plans to cover 140 million people in 25 markets with 42Mbps speeds.
We've known that a lot of this was coming for some time now, but it's good that it's all official, even if T-Mo wasn't as forthcoming as we'd like when it comes to concrete release dates for stuff like the G2x. Thanks to our friends at TmoNews, though, we've got a possible launch date for both the G2x and G-Slate: April 20th. As usual, we'll keep you updated with more pricing and release info as it's made available!
