As just about everyone knows by now, Apple released the iPad 2 last Friday and, although there have been some hiccups, sales of the tablet seem to have been pretty strong. According to analyst firm Piper Jaffray, Apple moved between 400,000 and 500,000 iPad 2s over launch weekend, with most retail outlets selling out shortly after the device went on sale last Friday. After polling people waiting in line for the iPad 2, Piper Jaffray found that nearly 3/4 of buyers were not iPad 1 owners.
Of course, Piper Jaffray wasn't the only analyst firm to chime in on the iPad 2 launch, and Wedbush Securities analyst Scott Sutherland believes that sales of Apple's new tablet were event stronger. Sutherland told Reuters that his firm "would not be surprised to see Apple sell closer to 1 million iPad2s in the opening weekend," with some Best Buy locations reportedly selling out of the iPad 2 and its accessories within 10 minutes of the device going on sale at 5:00 PM last Friday.
We won't know for sure exactly how many iPad 2s were sold this past weekend until Apple passes the official number along to us, but it definitely seems like they did pretty well for themselves over the past few days. There were a number of stores around me that were sold out by Saturday, and Apple's own site is reporting that orders placed today won't be shipping for another 3-4 weeks.
