Tucked away inside the original tablet device from Apple, the A4 processor was heralded as a great achievement. It made the iPad fly along, but obviously it was time for Apple to upgrade the system on a chip inside the iPad 2, and that's where the A5 processor comes in. However, a source speaking with the EETimes has revealed that Apple may have chosen another company other than Samsung to create the A5 processor. According to the source, Apple has chosen to go with Taiwaneese-based manufacturer TSMC instead of Samsung, due in part to the fact that TSMC has the highest yielding 40nm process and largest capacity in the world.
Additionally, one other reason could be Samsung's obvious position as a competitor to Apple. The source also mentioned that there's a future 28nm processor in the works, too, which could be put to use with the iPad 3. It's interesting to hear that Apple has possibly chosen to go with TSMC instead of Samsung, but considering the hard shove that Samsung has provided in the tablet market, probably not all that surprising.
