Apple has been pushing out iOS 4.3 betas for the past couple of months, but today the company finally announced when us common folk can get our hands on the latest version of iOS. When iOS 4.3 lands on March 11th, same day as the iPad 2, it'll bring with it enhanced performance for the Safari browser, iTunes Home Sharing for use over WiFi, AirPlay improvements, FaceTime support for the iPad 2, Personal Hotspot for the iPhone 4, and the ability to use the iPad's side switch as either a mute switch or orientation lock (Hooray choice!!). iOS 4.3 will be a free download for the iPad, GSM iPhone 4, and 3rd and 4th gen iPod Touches.
Many of us, myself included, were a bit disappointed that Apple chose to show off iOS 4.3 rather than iOS 5, but 4.3 still looks like a worthwhile upgrade for the devices that it's intended for. Speaking of which, it's strange that the shiny new Verizon iPhone 4 won't be getting the update initially. Apple made no mention of 4.3 for the VeriPhone, but the current speculation is that, because its CDMA, it may require a little extra tweaking. We'll keep our ears to the ground and update you as we learn more.
