3D has been a growing presence in movie theaters across the United States for awhile now. With movies like James Cameron's AVATAR leading the way, there's no doubt that Hollywood movie studios think there's plenty of money to milk from this medium. Of course, video game developers and publishers have jumped onto the bandwagon as well, and watching a 3D movie or sporting event in your living room is as easy as buying a 3D TV and wearing those glasses. So, should we be surprised that LG is getting ready to release a glasses-free 3D smartphone?

The LG Optimus 3D just had its specifications unveiled by LG not too long ago, and as everyone expected, the 3D element is certainly the main focus of the phone. While it's certainly not being held back in the physical specs department, I imagine that LG is putting all of their chips on the 3D aspect, and hoping for the best. I'll go right ahead and say that, in the movie theaters, I think 3D is a complete waste of time. Outside of horror movies, I'd rather just watch the movie without having to wear those glasses.

But, as we've seen in a recent video of the LG Optimus 3D, we don't need to worry about glasses when it comes to this handset. So that means we just get the experience, minus the heavy glasses. So is this the next "cool thing" when it comes to smartphones? Whether or not LG has a hit on their hands, and sells millions of the Optimus 3D, are we going to start seeing more glasses-free 3D handsets from manufacturers like Samsung and HTC? And, will we see Android be the catapult for this cool new thing?

To be honest, I wouldn't mind having a 3D phone. I may hate the experience in the movie theater, but I think having the tech on a phone that I can pull out of my pocket and show off to my friends (or to complete strangers) is a pretty cool idea. But it will just come down to the content that's made available for the handset. The more movies and games and applications that take advantage of the technology the better. LG can't slack on making sure that these things get developed for the Optimus 3D, or it will be dead on arrival.
