Yesterday AT&T shared their Q4 2010 financials, reporting that they added 2.8 million new customers in the final three months of the year. Many sites ran articles proclaiming that AT&T had dethroned Verizon as the largest carrier in the U.S., but Verizon is ready to dispute those claims. As you can see from the internal screenshot, Big Red says that AT&T included "other connections" in its 95.5 million total, while Verizon's 94.1 million didn't. With those connections, VZW says that their total is somewhere in the neighborhood of 102.2 million, which is obviously quite a bit more than AT&T.
Verizon's claims certainly sounds valid, and it'll be interesting to see how AT&T responds, if they do at all. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't, considering that they didn't actually claim that they were the nation's biggest carrier in their report yesterday. Still, it'd sure be entertaining.
