Hey everyone, I don't know if you noticed or not, but Samsung's Galaxy S phones still don't have Android 2.2. Sammy said recently that they're still running tests to ensure a simple upgrade, but the folks at AndroidSPIN claim that the company has a much more nefarious reason for the delay. According to a source that the site feels is "reliable," there's a perfectly good Froyo update ready and raring to be pushed out to the Vibrant, but Samsung is holding it back to boost sales of the recently-leaked Vibrant 4G. To make matters worse, the tipster is also claiming that the upgrade would enable 4G speeds on the OG Vibrant. The full quote from the source:
"Some disturbing things have happened the last week or so concerning our “Vibrant”. Samsung has NOT allowed us to push the update OTA for 2.2 because they feel it will decrease the value of the upcoming Vibrant4G +. While from a marketing aspect i totally understand, as the Vibrant 4G is what the original Vibrant should have been in the 1st place. But to shun off and bold face lie to customers is NOT what T-Mobile is about.
…Being that, Vibrant 4G and Vibrant have exactly same stats, added FFC and a new movie and the 4G. But i will tell you this, the original vibrant CAN utilize 4G FULLY. Yes FULLY. not what they are telling you."
It certainly strange that it's taken Samsung this long to push out Froyo for its Galaxy S line, but I don't know if I completely buy that they're secretly holding back the update just to push sales of the Vibrant revision, and I'm even more skeptical about the claim that the current Vibrant could be upgraded to take advantage of the 21.1Mbps speeds. On the other hand, there are a number of Galaxy S phones in other countries that are running 2.2, and Froyo has leaked out for a few of the U.S. models already. Either way, I hope you've kept a few grains of salt handy for this rumor, just in case. We'll update if you Samsung or T-Mobile comments on the matter.
