The Motorola DROID may have been released over a year ago, but Verizon and Motorola certainly haven't forgotten about it. Arguably one of the devices responsible for Android's success, the DROID will soon be getting the FRG83D update over the air that will bring it up to Android 2.2.1. There are a handful of enhancements to be found in the upgrade, including a new version of the official Twitter app, updated versions of both the Amazon and the News & Weather widgets, improvements to Exchange ActiveSync, and a new Gmail UI. You can check out all of the details at right here (Warning: PDF). It's also worth noting that a similar update (PDF) will soon be available for the DROID X, which will also be brought up to Android 2.2.1. There's been no official announcement just yet, but some users have reported that they've had the update pushed to them.
Seeing Verizon and Motorola continue to support the DROID over a year is pretty awesome, especially considering that there are newer phones that have gotten much less support. It remains to be seen if the DROID will get upgraded to Gingerbread, but since it's the most popular Android phone around (and 2.3 doesn't have any silly spec requirements), I wouldn't be surprised if it happened. The FRG83D update is rolling out in phases, so DROID owners, be sure to come back and let us know what the update is like after you've got everything installed!
