Windows Phone 7's next update, rumored to be coming in January, is finally going to bring cut/paste to the platform. While it'll be another month or so before most of us get our hands all over the upgrade, it appears that some select WP7 developer handsets are already running the new build of the OS. One of those users has spent some time with the oft-requested feature and described it to the folks over at WMPowerUser. His explanation of how it all works:
A user can tap a word in mail, IE, Word, etc and that word is then highlighted with arrows on both sides. One can then drag to the left or right to include more words. An icon appears above the highlighted word(s) (looks very similar to the copy icon in Office 2010) to copy. Open a new document, once the cursor is set/blinking and the soft keyboard appears, a paste icon (again, looks the same as the paste icon in Office 2010) is shown just above the top row of letters. In “Messaging”, a user can long press a specific IM which open up the hidden menu that now includes copy. Paste where you wish…
It's pretty disappointing that something as important as cut/paste didn't make it into version one of Windows Phone 7, but at least those users won't have to wait for the feature as long as iPhone users did. Unfortunately, the source of the info didn't give up any information about what else is in the update, like multitasking, but the good news is that we shouldn't have to wait more than around a month to try everything out for ourselves.
