Samsung's Galaxy Tab is still pretty new, and it hasn't even arrived on all carriers here in the U.S. yet, but one analyst believes that the sales of the Tab (or lack thereof) are already making an impact. Thanks to talks with suppliers, Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar believes that the tablet market is going to suffer from slow sales because consumers will opt to purchase smartphones and computers instead. These suppliers reportedly revealed that slow sales of the Galaxy Tab have caused Samsung to cut production of their tablet in half. The Tab isn't the only device to suffer, though, as Kumar believes that the iPad will have trouble hitting the 6 million sold mark in Q4, like many analysts thought, thanks to the newly-launched MacBook Airs that are eating into the iPad's sales.
This report is pretty surprising especially considering how often we've heard of strong iPad sales. While it's possible that the new MacBook Airs could eat into iPad sales a little, I have a hard time believing that a lot of people will select a $1000+ computer instead of the $500 iPad. Then again, the MacBook Air is capable of doing more, including playing back Flash content, so perhaps more users will end up buying an Air. As for the Galaxy Tab, I feel like it's kind of tough to gain a good idea of how well it'll sell considering how short it's been on the market. Launch sales may not have been spectacular, but after it's been widely distributed, especially here in the U.S., the numbers could go up. I'm no analyst, but perhaps we should give the tablet market a little more time, especially with the upcoming holiday season, before predicting its demise.
