Prepare for (another) disappointment: Eric Schmidt didn't announce that Gingerbread was coming today at the Web 2.0 Summit like some thought.  Schmidt didn't leave us completely in the cold, though, because not only did he say that Gingerbread would come arriving in the "next few weeks," he even whipped out a Nexus S (running on T-Mobile) and showed the device off a bit.  He didn't actually refer to it as a Nexus S, instead referring to it as an "unannounced phone" from an "announced manufacturer," but it's not like we haven't seen a Nexus S in the wild before.  Schmidt also explained that the device, as well as Gingerbread itself, will feature near field communication support.

It's kind of sad that Eric Schmidt didn't officially launch Gingerbread today, although I don't think anyone is terribly surprised.  What is surprising, though, is that Schmidt actually pulled out the Nexus S and demoed it shortly.  Sure, he didn't really give up any information about it, but it's nice to know that the Nexus S is still alive and kicking.  So, who's salivating at the thought of a Nexus S-NFC-Gingerbread cookie sandwich?
