We've heard all kinds of rumors in the past, including one that said that we wouldn't see RIM's BlackBerry tablet at DEVCON today, but none of that matters now. During the keynote event today at DEVCON, RIM unveiled the BlackBerry PlayBook that is running a new BlackBerry tablet OS not based on BB 6, but a new OS based on QNX. Specs for the PlayBook include a 7-inch 1024x600 display, a 1 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB RAM, a 3 megapixel front camera, and a 5 megapixel rear camera in a package that's just 9.7 mm thin. In addition, the PlayBook will support the full Flash 10.1 experience with hardware acceleration as well as HTML5 and 1080P HD video with HDMI and USB ports. I think the fact that RIM decided to pull the wraps off of the PlayBook today caught us all off guard, but boy am I glad that they did. The device has some killer specs (and a pretty good name), and RIM has also said that the PlayBook will be a great gaming platform for both the developers and the users, which will be important for the tablet to gain some mainstream attention.
