Usually Google updates their Android distribution chart every couple of weeks, but today is the first time in a month that we've see the charts updated. Android 2.2 experienced the most growth, with Froyo now residing on 28.7 percent of Anrdroid phones. Considering that the EVO 4G, DROID Incredible, DROID, and DROID 2 have all been updated to Froyo this point, this jump in market share isn't terribly surprising. Android 2.1 has 41.7 percent of the market, down from 59.7 percent one month ago. Unfortunately, Android 1.5 and 1.6 are still on a significant number of handsets, with 12 percent and 17.5 percent, respectively. Finally, the number of Android phones running "obsolete versions" of Android is at 0.1 percent, down from 0.2 percent a month ago.
It's definitely great to see over a quarter of Android phones on the market running Froyo, but it's equally disappointing to see that there are even more devices running either version 1.5 or 1.6. Whether these handsets were just released (Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10, Dell Aero), have been out for a while but still haven't been updated (Motorola BACKFLIP, CLIQ), or are just plain stuck on an outdated version of the OS (Moto DEVOUR), the fact that so many handsets are running such old versions of Android is crazy. Luckily, most of the devices listed should be getting updated to Android 2.1 or 2.2 in the next few months. Let's keep the update train rolling, manufacturers!
