Sure, Android 2.2 may be rolling out to Nexus Ones as we speak, but in press statements by HTC and Sony, the Hero and the Xperia X10 series (including the X10, X10 Mini, and X10 Mini Pro), will soon be receiving the update to Android 2.1. Hero owners can expect a small update coming soon to prepare the device for the full upgrade coming later this month. The X10 series will receive 2.1 "in the latter part of Q3." On top of all of the new features introduced with Android 2.1, the X10 will gain the ability to record HD video as well as send Timescape and Mediascape wirelessly to your television. Sony Ericsson's X8 will also get 2.1, but it may not launch with the update in tow. HTC Heros in Taiwan received the 2.1 update a couple of weeks ago, so it's nice to see the upgrade rolling out to everyone else.
I would prefer to see Android 2.2 being sent out to these devices, but if you've been stuck on version 1.5 for a year like the Hero has, I would take whatever I could get. Hero owners should hit the software update on their device to check for the first part of the 2.1 upgrade, while X10 owners can keep it locked on PhoneDog for more information regarding their update.
