With Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Apple's iBooks available, there are a variety of choices when it comes to eBooks on your computer or mobile device. One platform that hasn't seen as much eBook love, though, is webOS. However, if a recent Borders customer support message is to be believed, the company will release a webOS eBooks application along with apps for the iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Macs, and PCs. A PreCentral reader contacted Borders and asked about the possibility of a webOS app and received a reply that, while somewhat robotic, sounds promising:
“Thank you for contacting Borders with your eBook inquiry. There will be a free application available for the Palm Pre.”
To make the news even better, when the Borders eBook store arrives next month, it should be full of DRM-free eBooks, allowing the user to purchase a title and take it onto whichever device they choose. While reading an eBook on a 3.1-inch screen may be a little difficult for extended periods of time, it will certainly be nice to have the choice. Hopefully when the Borders app is released, it will spur development of other eBook applications for webOS. With HP recently announcing that they were indeed going to continue to produce webOS-based smartphones, the platform is looking more promising as each day goes by. Do you read eBooks on your phone?
