We already know that Google, specifically Dan Morrill, believes that Android fragmentation is something made up to scare developers and drive traffic to blogs, but a recent graph showing the OS distribution makes us believe otherwise. The data, collected over a two week span ending June 1st, shows that a majority of Android users are still stuck below version 2.0. While Android 2.1 is gaining steam at around 45 percent, Android 1.5 and 1.6 are still in the lead with approximately 54 percent of users. We're sure that users of the Motorola Droid and Sprint Hero are helping version 2.1 gain users, there are still people using devices like the Motorola Backflip that are stuck with a pre-2.0 OS. While the fault certainly falls with the carriers and manufacturers as well as Google, we're glad that Andy Rubin stated that the Android updates will begin to slow so that fragmentation will decrease and more users can experience the new, exciting features being brought to new versions of the OS.
