Our boys over at TmoNews have caught wind of something that could turn out to be very exciting. It's but a whisper in the air now, so if you're anywhere near a salt shaker you know what to do. The rumor is of a new T-Mobile codename entitled "Project Emerald," and sources close to TmoNews suggest that we're looking at a phone being referred to as a "new Nexus One-like device." Want to take a guess at what they're talking about? I'll give you a hint, it starts with a 'D' and ends with a 'sire.' That's right, though it's as far from official as things get, we just might be looking at the HTC Desire on Magenta. Though, TmoNews is quick to point out that it's entirely possible this could be "another new 'Super-phone.'"
Based on the fact that T-Mobile is ramping up their HSPA+ network with the promise of reaching 185 million potential customers by the end of the year, and the fact that Magenta is expected to have an HSPA+ device sometime in 2010, AndroidandMe seems pretty sure that whatever the device, "Project Emerald" is referring to an HSPA+ capable handset. Apparently, one of their sources also told them that an HTC press event was scheduled for June, so maybe the Desire is coming after all. In any case, let's not forget about that little grain of salt we just ingested because at this point, it's all conjecture. And don't worry, you know we'll keep you posted as things unravel.
If you follow me on Twitter you know that every other day I'm complaining about T-Mobile's lack of powerful Android devices (but don't get me wrong, I love T-Mo, I'm a customer myself). Let's hope this rumor comes true and shuts me up once and for all. Feel free to leave your comments below!
