I hardly know what to say to this. My pal Marin over at IntoMobile just posted something that had me do a doubletake.
Let’s say you were the dude who lost the next-gen iPhone at a German biergarten in California. You’d probably be hiding in a cave now, right? Your foible is world-renowned at this point, having spread to every corner and crevice of the webs. And the embarrassment over that is likely only topped by regret, self-loathing, worry over the possible end of your career — and yes, maybe even some actual fear. (The guy running your company isn’t exactly known for his forgiving nature.)
Lufthansa knows. Lufthansa cares. And the airline is trying to reach you, to offer a free trip to Germany, whose beers you clearly love.
A rep from the airline tweeted the following message:
I recently read in the news that you lost a very special phone at a German beer bar in California … At Lufthansa we also noted with great interest your passion for German beer and culture. We thought you could use a break soon – and therefore would like to offer you complimentary business class transportation to Munich, where you can literally pick up where you last left off.
My palm is literally on my forehead. Is this viral marketing genius? Or a transparent attempt at weaseling in on a huge news item — that has nothing to do with this industry — but that’s probably ripping this guy’s future to shreds?
I guess by virtue of the fact that I’m posting this, it might be the former. Or maybe it’s both. I honestly can’t decide. (And yes, I’m agog at being part of the machine.) In any case, if I were that guy, I'd be seriously considering leaving the country — free trip or no.
What do you think? Savvy viral tactic? Or an illogical marketing attempt that’s in really bad taste?
