After reporting on the official launch of webOS 1.2 yesterday, I imagined Palm Pre users happily downloading it and enjoying the new features. After all, with a paid App Catalog and improved functionality across the board, what could be better?
As it seems, the Pre constantly communicates with the Palm Profile server to backup and synchronize information, which could easily be billed as one of the best features of webOS. But when the server suddenly crashes, as it did last night, the Pre can't communicate properly, sending the phone into chaos and causing it to restore itself to the factory configuration (yep, basically a hard reset). What's worse, users were left with a near-useless device. Calls could still be made, but data functionality was nonexistent, and all information was gone.
Fortunately, the servers came back online this morning, but with devices in a factory state, users had to go through the mundane process of resyncing ALL of their data back to their phones. The users with homebrew apps were especially unlucky, as the Palm Profile only backs up applications from the phone and the App Catalog, and not applications that are independently installed.
The Synergy feature is one of those concepts that is the greatest thing since sliced bread - until it goes down. Did anyone else wake up this morning to a blank Pre?
