I love dedicated apps, but there's something to be said for mobile services that can be accessed by virtually any online device. Here are five that I find interesting, useful, or funny.
Get me out of here! is found at getmooh.com.
Enter in the time you'd like to receive an excuse to leave some place,
and the service follows through. Here's where getmooh outdoes similar
services: they have about forty recordings to choose from for playing
when you answer the call. So instead of pretending your way through an
imaginary emergency, just turn up the speaker phone and let the whole
table hear an Irish woman hurl obscenities at your worthless,
unfaithful ass. You can run to the bathroom and set this thing up in a
tight spot, but be sure you know something about the recording ahead of time if you
intend to broadcast. Some are unbelievable, while others simply tell
you to repeat after them; "What? You lost your keys? Oh man, I'll be
right there."
Jott is killer. Call 1-866-JOTT-123. Talk. Tell Jott what to do with the text it just created from your speech. You can send an SMS, publish a tweet, update your Remember the Milk task list, and a bunch of other stuff. Check out the vid:
SMS 411: I don't know how often I find myself in a situation where I need to send an email that will be received as an SMS. Still, It's nice to know that I can. I have an unlimited text plan, but maybe you don't. You just need to know the carrier your recipient subscribes to, and find the SMS gateway for their provider. Check the list here, drop in the digits, and save it in your address book. Voila! Easy email-to-SMS.
GetHuman is a database of phone numbers that feature annoying automated answering and routing systems. Look up the company you want to call, and bypass that stupid robot who spends 10 seconds apologizing each time it misunderstands you. Android and iPhone users have Dial Zero. The rest of you have your mobile browser and gethuman.com.
Gizmo5 won't run on every phone, but it looks like they've got a lot of models covered. It runs on the WinMo devices I have available. This program lets you make VoIP calls from your mobile. So this one's a download and may not really fit on this list. I'm changing the rules, last minute. It sports a lot of other features as well; like IM, file sharing, video calls (desktop version) and text messaging without the carrier fees. Personally, I find the VoIP most appealing, but I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who want a complete communications package.
Cheers!
