It seems Samsung Mobile will do anything to get your business. To promote a new lineup of text messaging phones, the company will attempt to set the Guinness World Record for "Fastest Text Messaging While Skydiving" this Friday, December 19.

A crew of 10 skydivers are slated to text during a 12,000-foot freefall at the Samsung Mobile XTREME TEXTING event outside Los Angeles. The challenge is to accurately text the following phrase within one minute before pulling the ripcords:

"The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human."

You've got to be kidding me. I went skydiving for my birthday one year, and I've got to say that this is madness. A minute or so in freefall flashes by in two seconds, and the wind whips so hard that even the healthiest cheeks end up flapping around all over. (Either that or I just have really, really loose facial muscles.) And texting the proposed message in a single minute through all of that? Geez -- I couldn't type that on a computer in time.

Good thing Samsung didn't hire me to attempt this. It wisely hired professional skydivers to perform the feat and four videographers to record it. Afterward, they'll send the footage to the Guinness Book of World Records in London for judging. The phones of choice, as if you didn't know, will be Samsung Mobile messaging phones.
