Looks like Sprint is joining the "Limits on Your Unlimited Data" party.
Boo! Boo!
According to a memo leaked on Sprintusers and reported by MobileCrunch, starting in July Sprint will be changing their terms of service to reserve "the right to limit throughput speeds or amount of data and to deny, terminate, modify, or suspend service if usage exceeds 5GB per month in total or 300MB/month while off-network roaming." That sounds a lot more like a 5GB/month limit than an Unlimited Plan, if you ask me.
The 5-gig per month limit will bring Sprint in line with AT&T and Verizon's "Not Unlimited" data plan restrictions, which is really a big drag. Considering that Sprint's forthcoming Samsung Instinct will require an unlimited data plan (last we heard), this puts a minor damper on thoughts of getting an Instinct, signing up for a cheapo SERO plan, and tethering to the Rev. 0 data network in hopes of kicking my Comcast cable modem to the curb. Yeah, like THAT would work.
Seriously, though, I hope that Sprint Legal is just doing this to preemptively cover their backs in case some massively mobile Bit Torrent operation decides to use the plan I just described to use tons of bandwidth on the cheap. Even if that's the case and Sprint doesn't really plan on messing with anyone's data service in the event that they violate this new ToS, it sounds like the Marketing Dept. is going to have to come up with a new word for "Unlimited" before this all kicks in sometime around July 13th.
