On Monday, QuickPlay Media announced a new service called ?VideoStreams? that provides free video content for owners of BlackBerry smartphones in both the United States and Canada. BlackBerry owners will have a choice of music videos, comedy, horoscopes and extreme sports along with any new content as it becomes available. There is no word on how QuickPlay Media is able to offer such a service for free, but I would bet there is going to be some advertising before, during, or after watching the videos. We'll have to wait and see...
The system relies on the same EV-DO technology used by Sprint, Bell Mobility, Telus Mobility and Alltel to stream all of the videos. Initially only owners of the Pearl 8130 model will be able to test the service, but QuickPlay promises to add support for other BlackBerry models worldwide over the next few months.
Now even though the service is free, you are still responsible for data usage. It's always a good idea to make sure you are on the right data plan before experimenting with any streaming video type of service to avoid those crazy overage charges.
