What's up from Sin City, everybody? I'm here in the CES Bloggers' Lounge trying to make sense of the past twenty-four hours, rest my weary head and feet, and chat with my new pal Luck of Gadgetaholic all at the same time. Between Pepcom's Digital Experience press event last night, Day One of CES today, and a round or two of Craps in between, I'm in full on Las Vegas overload mode already.
The buzz around the wireless players at the show this year is all about multimedia and extending the functionality of handsets as connected devices to access and control everything from your music to your home automation system. Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, LG, Motorola, and all of other big handset makers are here, of course, but so are a ton of smaller companies making plays in the content and accessory spaces. And while CES is the premier event for many parts of the gadget world, it's only the beginning of the cell phone trade season - with 3GSM in Barcelona and CTIA back here in Vegas coming in the next few months, we can expect many, many more handset and service announcements beyond what's been unveiled here this week.
But that's not to say there's nothing new here. Already I've gotten my hands on a trio of new Sony Ericsson handsets, the very tiny and very cool Neonode N2 touch screen phone, a pair of new Motorolas including the imaging powerhouse Z10, and the Linux-based open source OpenMoko Neo1973. And I've gotten to see some cool stuff that's currently only available outside of the US, including the very impressive LG Viewty.
So I'm going to do what I can to write up the past 24 hours before the Bloggers' Lounge closes and everyone heads out to watch the BCS Championship Game. And there's lots of videos of all the gear I've seen, so keep comin' back to PhoneDog over the next few days for all the phone news from CES.
