ASUS, Intel, and Sprint XOHM held a joint press event Monday in which they announced WiMAX-ready notebook computers to be available this year. ASUS' Chairman was joined by an Intel exec and Sprint's VP for Mobile Broadband Operations, Atish Gude, for a relatively short event in which they demo'd gaming and video applications running live on WiMAX-enabled ASUS laptops.
ASUS showed part of their WiMAX strategy, including plans for a WiMAX-enabled EeePC and the 1.2 lb R50A ultramobile pc, featuring a 5.6" LCD screen and built-in GPS and digital TV tuner. ASUS Chairman Jonny Shih also said that entry-level pricing for WiMAX notebook computers will be under $1,000, which is excellent.
In other WiMAX news, OQO showed a prototype of a WiMAX-enabled version of their Model 2 ultraportable, and LG had a WiMAX-enabled smartphone on display at their booth. The LG handset was actually a GSM/WiMAX phone, and so not necessarily a XOHM device, as Sprint runs a CDMA phone network.
Alright, Sprint - everyone's ready for 2008 to be the year of WiMAX. Roll out that XOHM!
