Samsung's a "Presenting Partner" of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay, don't you know. So they decide to offer good-hearted folks of the world a chance to get in on the action and carry the actual Olympic torch as it passes through San Francisco, CA (the only North American stop for the 2008 Torch).
The "Mobile Phone Samaritan" program invites people to nominate anyone (yourself included) "who has exercised quick thinking during an emergency situation by using a mobile phone to call for help to be rewarded for their heroics." Just write an essay of 100 words or less explaining how said person acted as a cellularly-enhanced samaritan in an emergency situation and send it off to Samsung by September 12 2007. Judges will select five winning entries (one for each Olympic ring, get it?) and offer said samaritans a chance to bear the torch.
I like this idea - the world needs more reports of "good news" - though I wish it was somehow extended beyond "during an emergency situation." I mean, using a cell phone to help an old lady cross the street doesn't count as an emergency situation, but it does constitute the work of a good samaritan, right? Not that I have any idea how one would use a cellie in that context ...
