The fall quarter has belonged to the Galaxy Note model for the past four years, which make shopping for the latest tablet a pretty easy decision. But this year, it’s a little different. Instead of one, there are two new large phones from Samsung with pretty identical specs but a few key differences. Welcome to our buying guide between the Note 5 and the S6 edge+. Hopefully, you’ll walk away with the answer to your buying decision question.

If you’re the type of person that lets specs decide your buying decision, you’ll be left for dust when you compare the Note 5 and S6 edge+. They both feature 5.7-inch Quad HD displays, both are AMOLED. Although the edge+ obviously has the dual edge curve panel, they’re both covered with Gorilla Glass 4 on both front and back with the only distinct difference being the Note 5 having a curved back, while the S6 edge+ having a front curved panel. Internally, they are powered by the same Exynos 7420 optical processor, 4GB of RAM, and the same Mali GPU. Also, they both have the same 16MP f1.9 aperture camera and even the same 3000mAh battery. So you might be starting to ask—where are the differences? Well, this is where things start diverging.

The big difference between these two is obviously the S Pen on the Note 5 and the lack of an S Pen on the edge+. The Note is still aimed at those who feel like they want a phablet experience with a pen to write with. A lot of distinctive software is aimed exactly to the S Pen on the Note 5 software and TouchWiz including things like air commands and a new feature like writing on the display while the phone is still locked. The ability to jot something down without unlocking your phone is a very attractive thought for those who are always on the go and don’t have enough time to unlock and open the Keep application or any type of other note-taking application. The last Note thing I want to mention is back to the S Pen. There’s a distinct feature with the new S Pen that will most likely cause old habits to come back and hit hard—I’m talking about the click. Samsung’s kind of ruined me here because when I’m bored and there’s really nothing to do (like being on an airplane), you will pull out this pen and start clicking it continuously. Thanks Samsung!

Now over to the edge+-- the big difference is the aim of the product. While the Note seems to win over customers who like the phablet experience, the edge+ wants customers who either want a bit of screen and nothing else or those who love futuristic phones and don’t mind the bulk. Now you can say, what about the Galaxy S6 edge, the edge+ is just a bigger display and some people just like that. The software has been tweaked from the Note variant to include things like edge applications. It’s a little tab that lives on either the right or left side of the phone which will have a few quick launch applications and access to your favorite contacts. While it’s more useful this iteration compared to the S6 edge, it’s still not perfect. And the only other thing to mention is the different feel in the hand. Unlike the Note with its curved back, the S6 edge has sharp edges which can prove to be a little bit more slippery. Also, I feel like I’m touching the sides of the display more often than the original S6 edge and it’s definitely registering more false touches on that phone.

So to pick between these two is sort of easy. If it were me, I would go with the Galaxy Note 5 all day. It’s just a better phone to be more productive on. But it’s also easier and nicer to hold in the hand. And in my opinion, it’s just as beautiful. The edge+ is really futuristic just like the S6 edge. But it doesn’t justify the price difference between these two. But I’m definitely with you. I like the look of the Galaxy S6 edge+ more but the functionality of the Note wins me all day. Between these two, the most sensible decision is the Galaxy Note 5. But the decision that you would make just because you can is the Galaxy S6 edge+. Well, that’s if you can save a whole name without taking another breath—the Samsung Galaxy edge+.
