I got this little guy in the mail. It’s been out for a little while now. This is the LG G Watch R, LG’s newest Android Wear device that features the world’s first completely round display. The Moto 360 has a round display but the display isn’t completely round, it has a little lip on the bottom to house all the display drivers. Whereas the LG G Watch R has the drivers embedded in the bezel around the display. So let’s go ahead and unbox this guy.

First of all, the packaging is pretty simple but it clearly looks like a premium device. If I didn’t know better, I couldn’t tell that whatever is in here is probably pretty expensive which it is since it costs around $300.

If we go ahead and open the box, it’s held together with magnets so we just have to have pull off the lid. We don’t really have to cut anything, which is always a plus. But there we go, the LG G Watch R is sitting right on top looking pretty darn clean. I’m going to put it off to the side for a moment though because underneath that, we will first find the setup packet directly below the LG G Watch R. And then underneath that, we will find some more goodies like the microUSB charging cable used to charge the G Watch R. and then there’s first, the wall charger with USB port on it. It actually was stuck to this guy when I pulled it out of the box. This is the 5-Pin little charging dock or cradle that attaches to the back of the LG G Watch R so you can actually charge this thing. It doesn’t have wireless charging built-in unfortunately so that’s kind of a disappointment. But the last item on the box is just another instructions and setup guide packet that lies on the bottom of the box. And that is it.

If we take a look at the watch up close though, I have mentioned this is the world’s first smartwatch with a completely round display. It’s also the first Android Wear smartwatch, in my opinion, that looks like an actual watch. It has the watch base numbers around the display to make it look like an actual watch. And even the stainless steel frame just resembles a classy looking watch.

Some interesting facts about this watch is first of all the leather band is removable or interchangeable. So if you don’t like the preinstalled leather, then you can easily swap it out by taking it to a watch shop. There’s also a PPG heart rate monitor on the back which is pretty standard. But what’s neat is that the back features a sort of matted stainless steel finish. It’s not plastic so it doesn’t stick to your wrist like a lot of smartwatches do—so that was a nice addition I found that LG threw in there.

If we power it on, first of all, the 1.3-inch full circle POLED display LG is calling it, it looks great. It features a denser 245ppi compared to the 205ppi display on the Moto 360 and colors just really pop there. They’re very vibrant and just much more saturated than on the Moto 360. My real complaint though would be that the display is smaller than the Moto 360 and so it feels a bit cramped. Some of the content does get cut off due to the round display, which is especially apparent with the LG G Watch R. the bezels are pretty substantial and it really doesn’t help that it rests above the display so when you’re swiping through the cards in Android Wear, it just doesn’t feel all that pleasant.

But with that said, the build quality is certainly fantastic. There’s no question about that. It’s definitely one of those items where the press images don’t do justice. I would say it actually looks a lot better in person than online, that’s for sure.
