This is sort of a freestyle on the usual unboxing video because I’ve never done a product such as this, which is this guy right here, the LG G3 VR headset. This is based on Google Cardboard, which you may have heard about from Mobile World Congress. You may have also seen a press release on PhoneDog.com saying that anyone who buys a LG G3 will get a pair of these for free with the purchase of the LG G3. And LG just hit me up and said “Hey do you want to check these out maybe for review?” And also we may have some giveaways coming very soon of these guys on this channel so make sure to stay tuned for that. But they said “Hey check it out. We want to know what you think about this thing.” And really interestingly as well, on the box, it says this is only the start, which is sort of like a huge hint that says you know what, LG is really going to be investing into VR like HTC and like Samsung. And definitely a lot of different other companies that are really investing into virtual reality.
Now I’m no expert in Virtual Reality—I’ve only used the Gear VR. I’ve never really used anything else like an Oculus or anything type of extreme VR system. This is really my first deep drink into VR and it’s also based on Google Cardboard and it’s not very expensive and it’s probably not going to be the best experience but it’s definitely one for me just to try it out. And also, hey I got this from LG. at least I should go ahead and give it a try. So let’s go ahead and unbox this thing and see what comes inside this box, which should be a box not a plastic basically.
Alright so the packaging is pretty cool—it’s kind of colorful and kind of reminds me of the Verge for some reason. It just says VR for LG G3 Let your eyes wander and then again VR for G3 is just the beginning so there’s definitely going to be some more products coming soon. The LG G4 event is April 28th, which should be very interesting as well. We might even see a new edition of VR or even a standalone product so let’s just go ahead and open this guy up. And inside we see a white blank box. Let’s just go ahead and open that up as well. So it says ‘Congratulations on your new VR for LG G3’ on this little cool little thank you card for buying it. There’s also a Quick Start Guide for your VR for LG G3 and here is the LG G3 VR system, which looks really interesting and feels kind of cheap.
So if you’ve never heard of the LG G3 VR system, it’s basically a Google Cardboard plastic model. It’s basically the same as Google Cardboard but it’s just made out of plastic and it fits the LG G3. Obviously, you can see the shape of the back buttons and obviously the microphone and stuff. But other than that, it looks pretty darn simple. This thing pops off and you put the LG G3 on the inside of this. You put the LG G3 in here. This kind of pops back on if I can get it to work right here. So that pops on very easily there. And then here is your eyepiece basically and that just kind of clamps right back on and you kind of just hold it like that. So I’ll go ahead and pop in the LG G3 and just try it out.
Okay so now I have the Google Cardboard app loaded on here. I’m just going to go ahead and put this into the phone holder just like that and I’ll just place it in on the unit itself. Pretty simple setup and installation there and let’s experience VR.
This is pretty sweet. Kind of foggy and cloudy, which reminds me of Google Glass when I first started that. It definitely took my eyes a couple of days to adjust to it but it’s pretty cool. Having a Quad HD display really helps because the resolution’s higher than there. But obviously real virtual reality has a lot more PPI than this.
I think I’m in France, am I in France? This is strange, freaky. Pretty freaky but really cool. Let’s just go ahead and exit out of here. Let me do something else, let me go to YouTube real quick. So we’re at YouTube and we’ll unbox therapy. Let’s do something else—Apple Watch. This is pretty sweet. I’m not really sure what you guys will see if I put this in there but basically I am watching the Apple Watch video inside of this and it looks pretty darn good.
So this is the LG VR. On my first impression, it’s really interesting. It’s kind of fuzzy right now because my eyes are just not used to it right now. Hopefully it will get better over time so I’ll definitely report back with some kind of video talking over my experience of VR, especially this guy. And also stay tuned for a massive giveaway of these guys right here on the PhoneDog YouTube channel. So make sure to leave me some comments below on what you think of the LG G3 VR.
