Apple had a press event today. You probably watched some of it and you probably heard of it. Apple unveiled two new iPhones, the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. In this video, we’re just going to highlight all the main features found in these two new flagship smartphones.
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus have been improved in just about every single area, some areas more than others. The body of the phone now comes in a high gloss Jet Black color configuration as well as a Matte Black, Gold, Silver and Rose Gold color configuration. The new home button is force sensitive and the phone, as a whole, is now water and dust-resistant. So it features an IP67 water and dust resistance so you can submerge the phone in up to one meter of water for up to 30 minutes, which is pretty impressive. Not quite as impressive as the Galaxy Note 7 and its IP68 water resistance but impressive for Apple nonetheless.
Between the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, the camera probably got the biggest design overhaul. It now features an improved Optical Image Stabilizer to reduce blur from shaky hands. There’s a new six-element f1.8 aperture lens and a 12-megapixel high speed sensor that sits next to a brand new flash, one that features four LED lights and the ability to compensate for the flickering of artificial light. The iPhone 7 Plus though takes it to a completely another level. It features two 12-megapixel camera sensors—one with a wide-angle lens and another with a telephoto lens for better zooming. What this translates to is really beautiful pictures, pictures with tons of bokeh which is the blur behind the subject in focus. It’s typically found in kind of high-end DSLR cameras. Apple has even added a special machine learning processor that applies a depth map to an image to blur the background accordingly. So of course, the images they showed captured from the iPhone 7 Plus were amazing. But we’ll have to wait and see how it performs in everyday use.
As for the display, the iPhone 7 features a 4.7-inch Retina HD display that gets 25% brighter than the 6S and the 6S Plus for that matter. The 7 Plus features the same 5.5-inch display size and a 1080p resolution with just a higher color gamut. It’s brighter and more vivid than its predecessor. Unfortunately, it doesn’t feature a 2K resolution display; maybe next year when Apple is expected to release an OLED display panel.
So one area where Apple has really stepped it up in is with sound. The headphone jack is gone. They have 86’d the 3.5mm headphone jack and replaced it with speakers. There’s one on the top and one on the bottom that gives the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus stereo sound that is twice as loud. What this means is that the lightning port will now double as the digital audio port and every iPhone 7 will ship with a pair of earbuds that feature a lightning port and every iPhone 7 will also feature a lightning to 3.5mm adapter for those “old” analog headphones that you might have lying around.
Powering these new smartphones is an Apple A10 Fusion chip. It’s a quad-core processor with two high-performance cores that are 40% faster than the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus. The two high-efficiency cores run at about one-fifth the power to prolong battery life. Battery life is actually expected to increase by about two hours compared to the 6s and 6s Plus. And graphics processing power will be 50% faster than the 6s and the 6s Plus; 240 times faster than the original iPhone (fun fact).
Also at the event, Apple announced wireless EarPods called AirPods that cost $159. The Apple Watch Series 2 was announced, which features a new material called ceramic. It’s water-resistant so you can go swimming with it and the display is twice as bright as before. It’s 50% faster, has GPS, and starts at $369. The older Apple Watch (or the original Apple Watch) has been updated to feature a new dual-core processor and it starts at $269. The iPhone 7 starts at $649 for the 32GB variant. It will no longer have a 16GB iPhone. The iPhone 7 Plus will start at $769 with also 32GB of storage. That is—unless you purchase the Jet Black color option, which starts at $749 (iPhone 7) and $869 (iPhone 7 Plus) since the base model features a 128GB of storage.
With that said, those are all the main new products announced at Apple’s event.
