Unlike the iPhone 6s Plus, the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 received a major design overhaul from its predecessor, favoring high quality build materials and ergonomics. It features a Gorilla Glass 4 front and back cover with an aluminum frame. The back of the device actually features curved glass sides that fit the natural curve of your hand making it feel much better to hold in the hand than the iPhone 6s Plus. The iPhone 6s Plus, in terms of design, is nearly identical to its predecessor, the iPhone 6 Plus. It’s made of high quality materials but it’s very slippery and the rounded edges might make it more comfortable in the hand. But they don’t really add a lot of grip to the device.
With the Note 5, we also have wireless charging built in. what’s pretty neat is that it now features fast wireless charging where it can be fully charged in just 120 minutes on a fast wireless charger. If fast wireless charging still doesn’t pique your interest, well the Galaxy Note 5 does also feature quick wired charging, allowing you to charge the device up to 50% in just 30 minutes. The iPhone 6s Plus, it’s pretty safe to say, will be left to the dust as it doesn’t include wireless charging or any quick charging functionality.
On the back of the device, underneath the Gorilla Glass 4, we have NFC; which is also true with the iPhone 6s Plus. But the Note 5 is pretty unique. It features Samsung Pay, which you can argue, is the best mobile payment platform. It features NFC for payment but also MST or Magnetic Secure Transmission. What this does is it emits a magnetic signal that mimics the magnetic strip on a traditional payment card, allowing you to essentially use your phone to pay for stuff at any store that accepts cards or has a card reader. It’s pretty awesome. I can literally leave my wallet at home. The iPhone 6s Plus has Apple Pay but it’s not quite as advanced as Samsung Pay as it relies on strictly NFC.
The Note 5 also features something called SideSync. SideSync allows you to share the screen and data between your PC and mobile device. You can receive alarms on your phone through your PC and various features on your phone on the computer. It works with both Mac and Windows and it’s ultimately better than the iPhone 6s Plus, which has limited abilities to sync with a Mac computer and a Mac computer only.
Powering on the Note 5 and the 6s Plus and you’ll see two large displays. The display that will undoubtedly wow you is the Note 5 display. It’s a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED QHD display that delivers far more color vibrancy and detail than the iPhone 6s Plus and its 5.5-inch 1080p LCD display. Black colors are deeper and more accurate and the 515ppi index is significantly greater than the 401ppi index found on the iPhone 6s Plus’s display. Seriously guys, if you haven’t checked out this display, go to Best Buy or something and just take a look at the Note 5’s display. It’s pretty good looking.
As for how each device runs, both devices are incredibly fast but each perform better in their own way. The Note 5 excels in multi-tasking as it features 4GB of RAM, which is twice as much as the iPhone 6s Plus. What this translates to is an unrivaled multi-tasking experience through the use of the Touchwiz operating system that is running on top of Android 5.1 Lollipop. Switching between applications is a breeze and just running two applications at once is also a breeze. The iPhone 6s Plus does a very good job at multi-tasking and delivering a snappy performance but with the multi-tasking features of Touchwiz, the Note 5 just offers the superior multi-tasking experience.
Along with the Note 5, we have a 16MP camera sensor and with the iPhone 6s Plus, we have a 12MP camera sensor. As with performance, these two camera sensors are really two of the best of the best. It’s very hard to go wrong with either. If you’re a casual user, who just wants the best-looking shot without needing to tweak any settings or add any color tweaks, I think the Note 5 and its 16MP camera sensor actually delivers slightly better results. Colors are a bit more saturated and vivid than the iPhone 6s Plus, which tends to capture more color accurate images. Ultimately, it’s really apples and oranges, or should I say Apples and Androids? I think for the majority of people, the slightly more vivid and slightly more saturated images captured with the Note 5 will look better than the more neutral but color-accurate images from the iPhone 6s Plus.
The feature I want to end with is of course the S Pen. The S Pen is really what makes the Note 5 a Note. It’s a digital pen that is built into the device and it actually allows you to quickly write on the display and perform precise functions and write down various notes quickly and effectively with the included Touchwiz S Pen features that have really matured over the generations. The S Pen is more functional than it has ever been. It’s not for everyone but it’s one feature that the iPhone 6s Plus clearly does not offer.
