The LG V20 made its official debut last night, and unlike the G5 that launched earlier this year, the V20 doesn’t offer the ability to attach modules like a camera grip or an add-on to boost audio quality. That doesn’t mean that LG is totally done with modular smartphones, though.
LG plans to continue its modular smartphone experiment with the follow-up to the G5. That’s according to LG spokesman Ken Hong, who explained to CNET that development of the V20 was well underway by the time and that consumers’ underwhelming response to the G5 didn’t spur LG to change the V20.
The G5’s modularity is one of its most notable features, but we haven’t seen a ton of those swappable modules ever since the G5 launches in the first half of 2016. The camera grip is pretty widely available, but the Hi-Fi Plus module is only officially available in select markets, and the U.S. isn’t one of them. If next year’s LG G6 is modular like the G5, here’s to hoping that LG has a couple more modules available and that they’re offered widely.
Do you think LG should release another modular smartphone next year? If so, what should LG change from the G5 and its modules?
