You know how Facebook’s News Feed tries to show you posts that it thinks that you’ll like the most, even if they’re not necessarily in chronological order? Well a similar sort of timeline is coming to Instagram.

Instagram says that in the coming months, your feed will be ordered to show you the posts that Instagram thinks that you’ll care about the most. They make sure to note that all of the photos and videos in your feed will still be there, they’ll just may not be in a chronological order. 

As for why Instagram is making this change, they say that users miss an average of 70 percent of the photos and videos in their feed. This tweaked timeline is meant to ensure that you don’t miss the posts that you’ll really care about. 

As I mentioned before, Facebook already optimizes your news feed to show you posts that it thinks that you’ll like. Instagram is owned by Facebook, and so it’s not a total surprise to see an optimized feed coming to Instagram as well. We’ll have to wait until the feature actually rolls out to see how good Instagram is at guessing what we like, but it’ll be interesting to see how users react. Instagram did recently move the post timestamps to a less prominent place beneath a post’s comment list, so maybe some folks won’t even notice.
